The North Bohemian Museum in Liberec was founded in 1873, originally for the exhibitions
of industrial arts. But during the first 25 years of its existence, the museum acquired
such a great number of items of the European and Oriental applied arts that it needed
more space. The current building of the museum, designed by Professor Friedrich Ohmann,
was built in the years 1897-1898. After WWII, the original range of the items in
the museum was widened and it includes items concerning the local nature, archaeology
and history.
Also the re-built renaissance tower of the former Liberec Town Hall, built within the
years 1599 - 1603 according to the plans of an Italian builder, operating in Zhořelec,
Marcus Antonius de Lancio, also known as Spazi, makes a part of the building of The North
Bohemian Museum. The foundation stone of the building of The North Bohemian Museum
originates from the fundamentals of the above mentioned renaissance tower destroyed along
with the Town Hall in the year 1893 after the completing of the new, thus current town
hall. The model of the old Town Hall is still on display in the history department
in the section introducing the Town of Liberec ("the chapel" behind the large exhibition
hall). The fascinating photo by J. Hunterová, taken at one of the museum nights, is not
a paste-up - the museum tower was really reflected into the clouds for a while in such
an outstanding way.
